The brand name Exolon® replaced Makrolon® in the solid sheet segment when the Serafin Group acquired the sheet business of Covestro in 2020. Makrolon® refers to the polycarbonate material, and is a registered trademark and property of the Covestro Group. More information about the change in brand names can be found here.
Exolon® polycarbonate solid sheets are essentially impermeable to UV light at wavelengths of 390 nanometres and below. You can find more information about the light transmittance of our solid plastic sheets in our datasheets.
Exolon® polycarbonate plastic sheets should be stored in a safe, well-ventilated place that is not exposed to direct sunlight or harsh weather conditions. If temporarily storing the solid polycarbonate sheets outdoors, make sure to protect them with an opaque, heat-reflective cover.
The best way to clean polycarbonate plastic sheets is using a soft cloth or sponge with mild detergent and water. Next, rinse them with luke-warm water. You can find more detailed information in the cleaning instructions in the technical manual for solid polycarbonate sheets.
Old masking is very difficult or even impossible to remove without damaging the surface of the solid plastic sheet. This is because it has aged and bonded directly to the polycarbonate.
To remove a sticker, label, glazing compound or grease, first rub it carefully with a soft cloth moistened with isopropyl alcohol. Wash with mild detergent before rinsing thoroughly with water. Do not use razor blades, scrapers or squeegees, as these may scratch the polycarbonate plastic sheets. Another method is to gently heat up the label with a hair dryer (not a heat gun), in order to soften the label’s adhesive before removing it.
There are various ways to bond Exolon® polycarbonate material. These include adhesives, solvents or mechanical fastening.
You can find more detailed information about bonding in the technical manual for solid polycarbonate sheets.
Deep scratches and grooves caused by sharp objects like keys, screwdrivers or knives cannot be repaired. Light scratches can be reduced or cosmetically concealed via hot air polishing or using a polishing paste, before applying a cleaning and polishing agent. We recommend to check out the polishing paste on a sample before using it on a scratched sheet.
For abrasion-resistant, coated products like Exolon® AR, however, we do not recommend grinding or polishing the coated surface. This can cause further damage to the coating and make it thinner, worsening its condition. Once worn off, the coating can no longer be repaired.
Load-bearing capacity is a complex issue that depends on a range of variables, such as the thickness and dimensions of the sheets, edge engagement, as well as whether the weight is focused on a single point or distributed evenly across the sheet. Polycarbonate Sheets can bear spread loads like wind and snow, but we do not recommend to walk on them. Because of the higher flexibility compared to glass, there is a risk that the sheets are pushed out of the frame and can fall down.
The Exolon Group recommends consulting a qualified structural engineer for advice in this regard.
The Exolon Group manufactures a variety of Exolon® sheet products for countless applications. Please note the warranty conditions that can be found on the product information page. Our products are developed to the highest standards, but require correct installation and maintenance. Product claims are subject to the conditions of the published warranty.
Yes. Products that are not hard coated, such as Exolon® GP and Exolon® UV solid polycarbonate sheets, can be bent up to a minimum radius that depends on the thickness of the sheet. This process is often known as cold bending. As a rule of thumb, the minimum radius to which the material can be bent is equal to 150 times the sheet thickness: (R = T x 150). Solid polycarbonate sheets can be cold bent in both directions.
Hard-coated Exolon® AR cannot be cold formed.
Yes. Like most polymers, the thermal expansion coefficient is much greater than other materials (around eight times greater than glass, six times greater than steel and four times greater than aluminium). For this reason, make sure that all clamping and fastening mechanisms have enough clearance for expansion and contraction. You can find more information in our technical manual for Exolon® Solid.

Polycarbonate solid sheets are lighter and offer greater impact resistance than glass. In comparison to acrylic, they are generally more robust and have a better hail resistance.
Polycarbonate boasts a better impact resistance than almost any other transparent material. It is virtually unbreakable. The impact resistance of polycarbonate sheets is 250 times greater than that of glass. They are tested to various standards and meet the toughest specifications.
Yes. Polycarbonate plastic sheets are relatively easy to cut and drill using commercially available tools. Sawing edges should be smooth to prevent risk of crack formation.
You can find more information about processing polycarbonate solid sheets in our technical manual for Exolon Solid.
Solid polycarbonate sheets are suitable for roofing, industrial glazing and safety applications. You can find a selection of application examples on our website under “Applications”.
Exolon® sheets are classified according to the European Union’s strict fire safety requirements. By not creating flaming droplets, they significantly reduce flame propagation compared to other transparent thermoplastic materials. When used in roofing or roof domes, the heat of the flame will cause the sheet to melt and form an opening through which smoke and heat can dissipate. This not only drastically reduces the temperature in the room, but most importantly reduces the load on the supporting structure. The sheet therefore effectively acts as a heat extractor, which can relieve the thermal load on a building by 300°C or more in a fully developed and growing fire. The harmonised European standard EN 13501-1 defines the fire classification of construction products and building elements, and replaces former national standards like DIN 4102, NF-F 16-101, etc. Typical classifications of Exolon® sheets according to EN 13501-1 are B-s1-d0 or B-s2-d0, depending on thickness and colour.
Exolon® FR (Flame Retardant) is a particularly flame-retardant product.
Sheet type and thickness: Information on the fire rating of the respective type can be found in the corresponding datasheet.
Polycarbonate solid sheets are available in a variety of colours and surface finishes, including transparent, opaque, matte and gloss.
Yes, solid polycarbonate sheets are recyclable. We also offer plastic sheets made from recycled material. Take a look at the recycled plastic sheets in our ECORANGE on our website.
Solid polycarbonate sheets reduce sound pressure mainly through reflecting sound waves. Exolon® SilentSound is the perfect solution for transparent noise barriers along motorways, with an extended warranty against weathering. Our Exolon® SilentSound range meets the European EN 14388 and German ZTV-LSW 06 standards for noise protection through sound barriers.
Polycarbonate solid sheets offer good temperature resistance and can be used at temperatures ranging from -40°C to +120°C.
Yes, polycarbonate solid sheets are suitable for use outdoors and withstand most weathering effects, including rain, snow and particularly hail.
