Roofing fit for the king of the skies: Four-layer multiwall sheets of polycarbonate comprise the maintenance hangar for the A380 Airbus

Long trips require advanced preparation. This is also true for the king of the skies, the A380 Airbus, which undergoes thorough maintenance before extensive traveling.

In order to accommodate the gigantic proportions of the superjumbo passenger plane, a new maintenance hangar was built at the Frankfurt International Airport. Exolon Group contributed to this ambitious project by means of a sophisticated roofing solution constructed from four-layer multiwall sheets of polycarbonate.

Optimal overhead protection during maintenance is essential if the A380 is to appear in top shape before passengers board. Exolon Group’s multiwall sheets with Y-shaped chambers and 6mm  rib distance guarantee the highest loadbearing and resistance characteristics against physical wear and tear from wind, snow, high winds, or heavy hail. This polycarbonate roofing solution fulfills hail safety requirements in accordance with EMPA norms, as well as fall-through protection in accordance with GS-Bau-18.

Thorough maintenance requires good lighting: transparent polycarbonate roofing

Barrel vaults were built into the hangar roof to guarantee plenty of natural lighting. The Multi UV 4/10-6 multiwall polycarbonate sheets ensure the hangar is bright but not blinding. Covering a surface the size of two football fields, the building isn’t only one of the largest hangars in Europe, it is also among the most energy-efficient. The four-layer multiwall sheets have a high degree of light transmission as well as thermally isolating characteristics, helping to reduce the costs of lighting the massive hall.

Safety first: structural and fire security

Safety isn’t only to be taken seriously during flights. Building safety is a top priority for all public and industrial constructions. UV 4/10-6 multiwall sheets from Exolon Group fulfill the high standards of fire safety classification B1 in accordance with DIN 4102. The skylights also feature integrated ventilation for smoke, heat, and exhaust fumes. A great advantage of the sheets was the ability to shape them on-site during construction. The low surface weight of just 1.75 kg/m² and excellent cold-bending properties made for simple transport and the possibility of on-site assembly.
